My First Sweater

Meet Carolyn Daniels and her first sweater. It is a fabulous pullover made from Malabrigo yarn. She is so proud of it and rightly so. Carolyn is a great knitter and we are happy to call her one of our Needle Nook family. You go girl!

New Items Abound

I think all of the fall and winter yarns have arrived. I am seeing reps for spring yarns now and it seems they have new winter yarns too so some of them have been ordered and are in stock. Below are photos of some of the newest.

This is called Ronda, a ruffle yarn. The difference is that is has a contrasting color on the edge. Isn't is adorable? The skein costs $15.00 and knits up quickly.

Noro has come out with a new book that is filled with great items. It contains hats, mitts, capelets, sweaters and more. It is a book that can actually be used by the average person. It is worth a look. $24.95.

Our new Dreamz needles have arrived, shown here in a Hiyahiya case. It is an interchangeable set containing needle sizes 4-11. It also comes with cables, end caps and needle size identifiers. We have extra pieces coming this week (extra cables, extra tips and more). I have tried them and they are great. These would make a wonderful holiday gift for your knitting friends.

And here is Margie's curlicue shawl (one of our knitalong projects) that she just finished. It is absolutely gorgeous, flowing, drapey, oversized. She knit it out of Royal Alpaca and what a great choice. I wish I had one!

Fall Is In The Air

It's rather nippy this morning in my house but never fear, I have slipped on my Featherweight Cardigan our knit group made last year. I never realized how much I would like this project but I really do. It's available free on Ravelry.

We are gearing up for fall classes at Needle Nook. We have added Famous Steve Tracewell to our list of fabulous teachers. Please see http://www.needlenookatlanta.com/ for photos and information on our classes. You can also sign up there.

We will hold a free workshop on this quick and easy Aloha Scarf on Saturday, Oct. 15th from 2-4PM. No reservations are necessary, just come on in. Only charge is for the Aloha yarn. You can knit this scarf in under an hour or finger knit it in about 10 minutes. How's that for fast?

We are expecting our first order of the new Dreamz needles very soon. These are color coded to size, have great points and smooth joins. We will start off with circulars, a few straights, double points and interchangeable sets. Be on the lookout for these.

Shop Hop 2011 Approaches - New Knitalong Beginning

Hi Folks:

It's been too long since I have updated here. The 5th annual Atlanta Shop Hop will begin on Sept. 17th and go through Sept. 25th. Passports ($1.00) go on sale this Saturday, August 27th. Purchase a passport, visit as many shops as possible, and maybe win a fantastic prize. Here is a photo of our next knitalong. It's called A-HA by Holly Chayes. It is knit in sock weight on size 5 needles and requires about 1400 yards of yarn. Recommended yarn is Mini Mochi. I have started mine in Jojoland Rhythm. It needs a yarn that has long color floats, not one that changes frequently. The pattern costs $6.00 and you can download it from http://www.tangledness.com/. Wednesday is the day we will meet. One group meets in the afternoon on the first Wednesday of the month from 1-2PM. We will also work on this at our regular knit nite every Wednesday from 5-8PM, so you can join us for either time or both. Everyone who has seen this pattern oohs and aahs over it so maybe you would like it too. Here is a photo of the one I started last night.

See what I mean by the long floats of color? It needs this to form an eye-pleasing color formation. Pattern is super easy, all written out, no charts.

So get yourself a copy and come by next Wednesday to select your yarn. We will be working on this for several months as it is a rather large piece. We don't put any time limit on our knitalongs, everyone works at their own speed. I haven't even started the last design we chose. Come have some fun.

New Yarns For You

Come check out the two newest yarns we have received. The top photo is called "Delicato" and contains 640 yards of gorgeousness. The fiber is tencel and it accepts dye like silk, giving that beautiful sheen. It would be a stunning shawl. The skein sells for $29.99.

The next two photos are Lucatape. This is a three strand novelty with sequins. I have already knit a shoulder shawl using only one skein ($24.00). There would be many uses for this lovely.

I finished my Malabrigo shawl in sock weight and am about three fourths of the way through a second one in Silky Merino. It is beautiful and in my favorite Malabrigo color, Amoroso. I made it a little bigger and therefore am holding my breath to see if I have enough to finish. I know better than this but couldn't help myself. Chock it up to old age! Here is the finished shawl.

Malabrigo March Roars In

If you are a Ravelry member and a Malabrigo fan you probably know about this. Each year they sponsor Malabrigo March where you knit as many Malabrigo projects as possible. Since we just received a shipment of their new Book 3, I decided to participate. I cast on the Scalloped Shawl in two colors of sock yarn and began to knit. I was soon hooked on this project and the yarn. It is a dream to knit with, so soft and supple. The pattern is beautiful yet surprisingly easy to knit. I am about half way done already. This new book is gorgeous. It contains patterns for shawls, cowls, sweaters, an ostrich and more. It is their finest effort to date. Be sure to take a look at it soon.

Moving Right Along/Malabrigo Shipment

My knee is healing, I can feel the difference in it from 2 weeks ago. I'm sleeping better (mostly) and even doing a bunch of knitting. As promised, I am putting the Malabrigo squares together. I have 5 more to do, out of 30. Then I have to figure out some kind of border for it. It feels dreamy in my hands and I am really glad I did (am doing) it. We just got in a new shipment of Malabrigo, including 10 colors of Rasta for their beautiful cowl. We also got in 6 new spring yarns from Knitting Fever, Sirdar and Katia. So come see all that is new.

Confined to Home-This Is a Good Thing!

So the Dr. came up with a space and I had my knee replacement surgery last Monday, Jan. 24th, and came home Thursday. I am improving each day but getting around is difficult. Can't stay up too long and then have to rest, nap, do exercise, get on the CPM machine (it moves your knee for you), etc. There is not much time to knit but I have been doing some because I hate to waste the time and we have a knitalong going on at the shop and I don't want to fall behind. I promised myself that I would stitch together the squares from our Malabrigo afghan knitalong (2 years ago) but haven't done it yet. I need some encouragement. At least I'm not the only one who hasn't done this. I think Iwill take it out now. Wish me luck.

Just Rocking Along

By this date I had expected to have already been to the hospital, had knee replacement surgery, and been home. But Mother Nature had other ideas. My surgery was scheduled for Monday, January 10th and I knew I was in trouble when it started snowing the evening of the 9th. I live on a hill, my street is slightly up a hill and then to turn off it there are hills both ways. There was no way I could get there. So now I am waiting for a cancellation or other miracle to happen so that I can get on with it. The bad part is that I have had to stop taking my anti-inflammatory medications which I didn't think helped that much but since stopping them have found out that they do help. The worst part is that my hands ache but I keep on knitting. Won't stop this for any reason that I can think of. I'm afraid to give in. I am working on several projects at once, the main one being the Curlicue Shawl Knitalong. This is coming along nicely, 5 of 13 sections done so far. I also finished a hat and a Rasta cowl. This is the one they have been advertising in the knitting magazines. I managed to get a copy of the pattern in advance and worked up the cowl. It was very easy. The pattern books should arrive soon along with another order of the bulky Rasta. If you haven't seen this yarn you really should take a look at it. Talk about instant gratification!

New spring yarns have started to arrive. First to come in is Baby Milk, a sport weight that knits at 5.5 stitches per inch. It's composed of 70% merino and 30% milk. There are free patterns on the Knitting Fever website. I haven't used it yet but it feels very nice.

Additional new yarns should trickle in over the next month or so. Be sure to check it out.

January is ME Month

After rushing to finish projects for holiday gifts, it's time to sit back and enjoy some ME time. We have officially declared this month to be knitting for yourself month. You can start that project you have been putting off because you had other obligations. It's time to celebrate yourself. So pull out that pattern, yarn and needles. Get going on ME time.

We have a new knitalong starting on Wed, Jan. 5th. It's called the Curlicue Coverlet, although most of us will make it into a shawl instead. You can join in (Wed. day from 1-2PM, or Wed. night from 5-8PM) and get going with us. There is no charge, only yarn and pattern to be purchased from us. Call us for more information and see photo above.

The other item that is big this year is cowls. They are easy to knit, quick and stylish. We have several models in the shop that you can check out. I have recently finished cowls in Malabrigo Rasta (super quick) and Colinette Art. This would be a great ME project.

Rizos Ruffle Yarn Has Arrived

This is my Rizos scarf in progress. This tape yarn has loops on one edge and this is what you knit in to to form the stitches. It's really easy and works up quick. I have used a size 8 needle and 8 stitches but you can make it larger or smaller to suit your preference. I think 6 stitches would work just as well. The cost is $12.00 per hank and you don't even have to wind it up.

Fall Happenings

Pictured above are some of the events going on and planned at Needle Nook. The top (not very good) photo is of the knitted beads we are doing in a class on Sat. Nov. 13th from 3-4:30 PM. You will learn how to knit with beads and place the knitting over a wooden bead. Class fee is $30.00 and that includes materials to make 3 beads. Registration is in progress.

The second photo is the Curlicue Blanket (turned into a shawl by Betty). We have had so much interest in this project that we are starting a knitalong on the first Wed. in January, 2011. There will be two options. Wednesday afternoon from 1-2PM or our regular Wednesday knit nite from 5-8PM. We will be working on this at both times. Registration is necessary for this KAL. More information later.

The third photo is the bulky neckwarmers that I knit in two hours. You won't believe how fast you can make this item. Need fast holiday gifts, this is the answer. It's knit on size 15 needles with bulky yarn so it goes quickly. Add a fabulous button and you are done. I'm making these for gifts this year for all the ladies. Purchase the yarn for this project and I'll give you the pattern free.

Needles, needles everywhere

Literally everywhere. We just received our first and very large shipment of the new Lana Grossa needles. There are two kinds. One is chrome plated brass circulars in all sizes in 16", 24" and 32" lengths. The other is layered wood in colors to form a lovely design. These are available in double points, crochet hooks (not in yet) and circulars in 24", 32" and 40" lengths. Not every size in each style has arrived yet but all are on order. These needles have very, very smooth joins and extra sharp tips for those who love working with a pointy needle. The yarn glides right over the join with no stopping to push it up. I loved working on the sample I did. So come in and give it a try. You'll like it.

Stitches Fun

Here we are with the Ravelry crew we spotted at Stitches on Friday morning. There's Alma, Eve and myself pictured with them. We had to stop and tell them how much we enjoyed Ravelry and they thanked us and gave us buttons to wear.

The Stitches market was very nice with many vendors attending. I saw many folks I have known over the years from TNNA shows. I did purchase some cute drawstring pouches for the shop and stitch markers too. The only thing I bought for myself was a beaded necklace kit, which I have already completed. It made me realize how much I enjoy working with beads and so I am trying out a few ideas. Who knows what it will come to, probably nothing. I did learn a beaded cast on from this kit and have used this on a new scarf model for the shop. It is coming out nice.

Mother's day is coming up this weekend and my daughter and I will head over to Home Depot to pick up some flowers. Then we will come home and pot them all up for the patio. We will also purchase vegetable plants for the garden. It should be a fun day. I hope you are able to spend time with a family member this Sunday or at least have a phone call. Tell Mom how much you love her. You can never hear it enough.

Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser - Report

Our event was held on a beautiful sunny day. The vendors were there as well as the shoppers. The items for sale were wonderful and many went home with new owners. Artuzzi's supplied free pizza and drinks for everyone - that was so generous of them. All of the silent auction items have not been picked up yet but we are somewhere in the range of $2,000.00 that has already been donated to Ovarian Cycle (this event happens this weekend). The shawl raffle was won by Sandee Stephenson and the bowl was won by our own Jan Goodloe.

Thank you to everyone who participated - either by being a vendor, attending and purchasing items, baking for the bake sale, spreading the word and general helpers. You made a valuable contribution to an important quest and you should be proud of yourselves.

Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser & Sidewalk Sale-April 10th

Happy Anniversary Needle Nook

The Needle Nook opened on March 20, 1976. Back then I was a 31 year old who knew nothing about running a business. It's a wonder the shop survived but it did and now it's 34 years later and still going. All this is thanks to wonderful loyal customers and friends and great staff.

The beautiful Malbrigo Rasta yarn has arrived and is a beauty to behold. No one can dye colors like Malabrigo. The Rasta is a super bulky weight, knitting at 2 stitches to the inch. We have 10 gorgeous colors to choose from. Each hank contains 90 yards and sells for $24.00.

Lots of new yarns have arrived already. Light weight cottons and blends, sugar cane yarn and more. Above is a shrug knitted in the new Mia bulky cotton. We will offer a class on this soon.

And also shown above is a new knit bag from Namaste. It is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. We also received circular needle cases and gadget cases from them. They look like leather but are actually faux.

Finished Olympic Challenge

This is the Citron Shawl from the current issue of Knitty.com. It is our knitalong project and I decided to do it as an Olympics challenge. I cast on during the opening ceremonies and finished this morning. I set a goal of a certain number of rows to do each day. At the beginning it was easy to maintain my pace but as the rows got longer and longer and longer it was tough but I perservered and completed it this morning. I even added 3 repeats of the pattern to make it larger for me. It came out great. I used a lace yarn called "Ballerina" which is smaller than the Malabrigo lace it calls for. If you enlarge this pattern, be sure to double the yardage needed. I ended up with a tiny, tiny little ball left over. All in all it was fun and I have a great spring shawl to wear.

Needle Nook Winter Olympics Knitting Competition

Hi Everyone:

First of all, thank you to all who have contributed to the Haiti Relief Fund. We have collected around $2800.00 as of today with a few more days left. This money was matched by Knitting Fever and sent to the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders. Your generosity was sorely needed by the residents of Haiti. Thanks again.

On to a new venture. The Needle Nook has always supported community service projects. We have done chemo hats, preemie hats, childrens chemo hats, ovarian cancer scarves and more. We thought it would be fun to have a Winter Games competition. Here's how it works:

Knit or crochet the following items for donation to charitible organizations:

Stoma Covers *

The person who turns in the most items wins a $25.00 gift certificate to the shop. Competition starts with the opening ceremony and ends with the closing ceremony (Feb. 12-Feb. 28). Honor system, no combining with your buddies. Must be received at the Needle Nook by 5PM on March 6th.

You can find free patterns on the web for most of these items. * The stoma covers (for tracheotomy patients) MUST BE MADE OF 100% COTTON smooth yarns with no fuzz. You can make a 6" x 6" or 7" x 7" square or something of that shape and size. This is a great way to try out some new stitch patterns. It's just like doing a dishcloth except you add about 14" ties to the top, to go around the neck. Teddy bear sweaters should fit about a 8" - 16" bear. These are given to children in trauma. The rest of the items speak for themselves.

Help Haiti Victims

One of our yarn suppliers, Knitting Fever, has generously offered to match any amount sent to them for Haiti earthquake relief. If you wish to donate you can make out a check to The Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders and write Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund on the bottom. Bring in your check or mail it in to Needle Nook, 2165 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, Ga. 30329. Please don't delay, we will only collect for a few more weeks. We sent off the first group of checks for over $1,300.00 just yesterday so that will go a long way when doubled. Thank you to all who have donated so far. We have taken donations from $5.00 to $500.00 so no amount is too small or too large. Thank you for being such caring and concerned knitters and crocheters.

End Of Year Reductions

Last Class of The Season, New Malabrigo Yarn, More

This is a photo of a new felted bag I just finished (minus the handles). The idea came from a new book we received called "Knit and Felt Bags". It has some of the most innovative and up to date felted patterns I have seen in a long time. My bag used 4 colors of Galway, one skein each and one skein of Dawn (bobble yarn). Total retail cost - $30.00 and it was knit in 2 days. It went very fast because it's done in the round on a size 15 needle. It was huge before felting and shrunk down to a very nice knitting tote size. This would be a great holiday gift and there is plenty of time to knit one.

Here is another idea for a holiday project. This scarf, done in seed stitch, used 2 skeins of Lumina and one skein of Kid Seta mohair (held together). Knit on a 7 or 8 needle, you can get this done quickly. Total project cost -$28.00. We have about 8 color combinations.

Here is the yarn we have been waiting for. It's from Malabrigo so you know it is soft. This beauty is called "Twist" because it is plied and twisted together, unlike their worsted. It contains 100% baby merino and 150 yards. It knits up as a heavy worsted or aran, about 4 stitches per inch, although you can go smaller or larger. There are 16 beautiful colors to choose from. You need to really feel this yarn to believe it.

Here is a photo of our last class for 2009. This scarf is knit with fine mohair in an original lace pattern and beads are attached in the center of each medallion. Class will be held on Saturday, November 21st from 3:00-4:30PM. Class fee is $39.00 which includes the yarn, pattern and beads. You would bring your own needles (size 7), steel crochet hook (size 10) and a magnet board. Also bring yarn and needles for practice. We will be holding classes and events during September, October and November. Here is a listing of what is on the schedule for now:

Sept. 12 - Slip Stitch class - learn color knitting the easy way. 11AM-12:30 PM. $15.
Sept. 12 - Fast and Fun Holiday Gifts - Fee of $10.00 allows you to choose up to 12 free patterns with yarn suggestions. These include hats, scarves, mittens, dishcloths, wraps, wrist warmers, golf club covers, felted child's purse and more. Spend $25.00 on yarn for these projects and receive a $10.00 store credit for future purchases. 2-4 PM.
Oct. 17 & 24 - Learn to make socks. Two week session with homework. $30 + supplies. 11AM-12:30PM.
Oct. 31 & Nov. 14- Learn to make a Tam. In this class you will learn provisional cast on, shorts rows, three needle bind off and picking up stitches. $30 + supplies. 3-4:30 PM.
Nov. 14 & 21 - Learn Entrelac. This popular technique is easy to learn and will bring a new dimension to your knitting. Add it to shawls, scarves, hats and more. 11AM-12:30 PM. $30 + supplies.
Sept 21-Oct 12 - Knitting 101 Monday evening sessions-7-8:30PM. Get help with your projects from Linda. $60.
Sept 22-Oct 27 - Beginners Knitting with Linda. 5 weeks and you will be knitting. $125.
Morning Knitting 101 is ongoing. Call for dates and availability. Wed, Thurs, Sat. AM.

All classes require pre-registration so call us if you have an interest in any of these. Fall is a great time to learn a new technique or get help with that new stitch. Many of the patterns for our Fast and Fun Holiday Gifts can be done in a evening or two and use 1 or 2 balls of yarn. We have models at the shop for many of the class projects. New Yarns Are Being Shelved

Our blowout sale was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who came and purchased and helped us make room for the new stuff. We have started to put out what has already arrived and here is a list of some of them:

Bariloche, Los Andes and Santa Fe from Aslan Trends. These 3 yarns are all dyed in the same colors so you can coordinate your project. The yarn comes in bulky, worsted and sock weights and the colors are gorgeous.
Coliumo and Toconao from Knitting Fever. Beautiful semi solid wools for winter knitting.
Lustra and Blackstone Tweed from Berroco as well as the new pattern books.
New colors in Mini Mochi and Mochi Plus.

Today we will be stocking more new yarns as space permits. We have also added more sale yarns to our empty playpen ($3.00 per ball), so bargains are still available.

Upcoming Classes

Hello Everyone:

This post will let you know about some classes being held at the Needle Nook. First up is our Mohair Lace Scarf with beads. There is alot of interest right now in beaded lace so this is a good introduction to it. We will start on a simple lace scarf. No lace experience is needed, just basic knitting skills. The class will be held on Saturday, August 15th or Sat. August 29th from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM and the fee is $35.00 which includes your pattern, beads and class fee. It does not include knitting needles or crochet hook (which is used to attach the beads). See photo above.

Next up is Knitting 101 with Linda. This class is for those who need help with their projects. Linda can help solve them for you. This 3 week session meets on Monday evenings from 7-8:30 and runs from Aug. 17-Aug. 31st. Fee is $45.00.

After that comes Beginning Knitting with Linda. Starting on Aug. 18th and ending on Sept. 15th, this 5 week session will teach you all the basics of knitting. We meet from 7 - 8:30 PM and the fee is $125.00 which includes basic supplies. Come learn to knit!

Sept. 12th is the date for our slip stitch class with Shirley. Slip stitch is a color technique and a good one to learn. It is easier than intarsia or fair isle with great results. Class will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12th from 11-12:30 PM and class fee is $15.00. Try it, you'll like it.

That's all the dates we have positively scheduled for now. Also on the horizon is a beginning entrelac class and learn to knit socks, so check with us if you are interested in these.

This And That

Our very first time hosting a Knit In Public day was a success, even with a wrench in the plans. Our event was scheduled to be held at Artuzzi's restaurant but 3 days before they suddenly closed with no warning. Undaunted, Marian and Lou arranged to set up tables in front of the shop and carry on. When they went down to Artuzzi's on Sat. morning to hang a sign directing everyone to come to N. Nook, the new manager was there and invited us to come down and use the patio and help themselves to free drinks. They knit for a while at Needle Nook and then moved down to Artuzzi's patio for the rest of the afternoon. Everyone received a free needle card and a discount on yarn. Thanks to all who attended and we will try it again in the fall, when it is cooler.

I did not attend the TNNA show this year due to difficulty with my knees. Since I have seen all of the major reps, I hope I did not miss anything important. I am constantly on the lookout for new products to stock the shop. If you see anything I need to know about, please contact me or bring it in. I love new stuff.

Since we have no classes scheduled for July, I would like to invite our customers to drop by on Saturdays, July 11th, 18th or 25th, from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM to sit and knit or get help with a minor problem. We cannot help with major problems on these days. Please limit your questions to yarn you have purchased here and knitting only. Thank you.

Please note, we will be closed July 4th. We have not changed our Sunday hours for the summer. We will remain open every Sunday from 1PM - 4PM for your convenience. Hope to see you soon.

World Wide Knit In Public Day

Isn't this great? We have our very own knitting day! This is the second or third year for this event and it's just a way to bring knitters together to show off our addiction to everyone. Needle Nook will participate this year by gathering down the way from us at Artuzzi's restaurant. They have a patio and have graciously agreed to be our meeting place on June 13th, from 11AM - 3PM. They are also providing a special buy one lunch, get the second lunch free. So come join the bunch as we KIP (knit in public) for a few hours. Needle Nook will also be offering some specials this day so stay tuned.

Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser Photos - Last Set

As you can see by these wonderful items, we will have many, many unusual and varied objects for sale. Look at the hand-knotted stitch markers above, the beautiful quilted wallhanging and the great hand made earrings. Our fundraiser is just one week away and we are all very excited. The silent auction has about 16 items that you can bid on. We will be selling tickets for our shawl and knit bowl raffle and have a bake sale as well. Please join us on April 18th from 2-6 PM and help support this community service project. Hope to see you there.

Customer Spotlight Sale - Ovarian Cancer Fundraiser

Our second ovarian cancer fundraising event will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 from 2PM-6PM. We are inviting anyone who crafts to come and set up a table outside on our sidewalk to sell their wares to the public. In return you would donate 15% of your sales to the "Ovarian Cycle" event being held on April 25th. We are looking for those who make beaded jewelry and wearables, weaving, quilting, knit, crochet, sewing, polymer clay, felting and more. The only restrictions we have are yarn and original patterns. Please register with us by 4/11 so we can have a variety of goods.

Be sure to come by and purchase a raffle ticket for our hand knit shawl, donated by Shirley Robb. Tickets are tax deductible when a check is made out to "Ovarian Cycle". We will also be holding a bake sale and possibly a silent auction - so if you have anything you would like to donate to this, please let us know ASAP. Last year we had silver jewelry, weaving, beaded jewelry, hand knit hats, felted purses, quilts and much more for sale. This is a great opportunity to select gifts for Mother's Day, Father's Day, graduation, birthdays and more. New Yarns Arriving At Needle Nook

This isn't a very good photo but I wanted to show our latest import from Peru. Trabajos del Peru is imported by Plymouth Yarn and is a thick and thin 100% wool. It contains 147 yards and knits at 4 stitches per inch on a 9 needle. Lou described it as a cross between Malabrigo and Manos. It's a lovely yarn. $14.00 per hank.

Here is something unusual. It's made of 100% sugar cane viscose, something we have never seen before. The colors are very subtle, blending easily from one to another. Ruca Multy is the name and it has 263 yards per hank. The gauge is 5.5 stitches per inch on a 4-5 needle. It would make a lovely summer top.

Take a look at these colors. Bombay is 100% mercerized cotton and has 251 yards per skein. It knits at 6 stitches per inch on a size 4 needle. I have been touching it every time I walk by it and last night at Knit Nite someone finally succommed to it. Marne started a pair of baby legwarmers and we all got to touch it in progress. The yarn is surprisingly soft and knits up nicely. It's $14.00 each and perfect for light weight projects. I can see a summer cardigan or shawl using this lovely yarn.

Learn to knit socks class - 2 sessions - Feb. 21st & Feb. 28th, 11:00AM - 12:30PM. Must know how to knit on double point needles as there is homework to be done in advance. $30.00 plus supplies. You will attend both sessions to complete your sock and there is knitting to be done between classes.

Learn to knit a mobius scarf. Two sessions - Jan. 24th & Jan 31st - 3PM-4:30PM. $30.00 plus supplies. This is a fascinating concept made popular by Cat Bordhi. It entails a unique cast on method.

Oh how beautiful is this? In this 2 hour class you will learn to make a lovely necklace from pre-felted balls. You will string them on wire and use crimp beads to hold in place. Saturday, March 7th. $20.00 plus supplies.

Are these adorable or what? Using prefelted items, pewter charms and beads, you will create a one-of-a-kind wacky woman pin for your very own. The sky is the limit so be ready to have some fun. Date will be Sat, Feb. 14th. $20.00 plus supplies. What a cute valentine surprise.

We will also be holding a "Blocking With Wire Blockers" class on Sat. March 14th. You can learn how to block with wires, a superior blocking method. We will block a scarf in class.

Scarf Exchange and Scarf Model

Above is a photo of our Wednesday Knit Nite bunch at our recent scarf exchange. In July we filled out a form, chose names and started working on our secret pals scarf. They were presented this week and all were outstanding, one prettier than the next. Everyone was pleased with the outcome and we will definately do some type of exchange next year. Won't you join us?

Speaking of scarves, this is one I just finished. Talk about easy, this was it. It is cast on sideways and done in garter stitch, changing yarns every few rows. This combination was angora and baby alpaca dk. It came out longer than anticipated, even though I did make a very large (50 stitch) swatch, so keep this in mind if you want to try it. The end word for this scarf is soft. It is a dream around the neck. It looks much harder than it actually is, so give it a try.

Forgot to take any pictures but believe me, it is gorgeous. The yarn arrived yesterday and is going quickly, 4 out of 24 bags already sold. The colors are wonderful, different from previous Malabrigo offerings, a few you can recognize. But all of them are beautiful and soft, soft, soft. So come by to feel and fondle our new baby.

After waiting more than 10 months for this yarn to arrive, I have been notified that it will be shipped on November 1st. It should arrive a few days after. All 24 available colors have been ordered so we will have the full color line to offer. The yarn is so soft and luxurious feeling, you will not be able to resist it. New Models/Patterns/Yarn

This is the cutest Kureyon jacket - we have had it hidden in the back for about 6 weeks because we didn't have the pattern for it. Well it arrived yesterday and so everything is in stock now. The swing shape is flattering to all and the garter and stockinette pattern is simple. This is a very stylish sweater and destined to become one of your favorites. Come by to see the sample soon.
Sweater #2 is an incredible cropped jacket. I say incredible because so far it has looked great on everyone who has tried it on. It is knit from Aysen, a very soft wool blend and only takes 4 hanks for a medium size. It has a simple lace border at the bottom, sleeves and front bands. A great substitute would be Malabrigo worsted. This cropped look is a must-have for the fall and winter. I knit the whole back in one afternoon, so it is a quick project on a size 10 needle.

Both of these jackets will scream style when you wear them. Drop in for a looky and see what all the fuss is about.

That's our handsome Lou modeling 3 of our new hat models. The top blue is from a new line of patterns we just received, Chic Knits, and is done in Malabrigo worsted.

The orange is also done in malabrigo worsted (can you tell we love this yarn?) and is a free download on Ravelry.

The cabled gem is the pattern we will be teaching in our cabled hat class on Saturday, Nov. 1st. It is knit in Baby Alpaca Grande Tweed, a new offering this fall.

All of these only took less than one ball and are quick to knit. They would make great holiday gifts for those on your list.

SUNDAY HOURS RESUME

The Needle Nook will once again be open on Sundays from 1-4PM. Starting on Sunday, Sept. 7, we will be open EVERY Sunday from 1-4PM. Lou will be manning the shop with occasional stints by Eve and Arlene. So come by and see Lou, knit with him, visit with him and keep him company. Well the big day has arrived. Allen delivered these beautiful new colors on Monday. In the top photo you see all 6 of the new colors. They are: top row left to right, Elderberry Jam and Catherine's Red Gooseberry Jam. The bottom row is: A Dawg's Breakfast, Needle Nook Nosh, Shirley's Breakfast Blues and Lou's Brew. These are the four exclusive colors that no one else will be selling except Needle Nook. Allen has outdone herself again by putting together colors to honor her friends and customers. They are just beautiful. Each hank is 460 yards of 75% merino and 25% nylon. They retail for $28.00. Come by to take a look at this newest addition to our Toasty for Needle Nook family.

New Malabrigo Book On Order

I heard back from Tobias at Malabrigo and their new book is ready. I have ordered a dozen copies so there should be enough for everyone. I don't know what is in it but the cover photo looks wonderful. The book is by Cornelia Tuttle Hamilton so it should be filled with fabulous designs with fabulous Malabrigo yarn. It should arrive within the next week or so. Be on the lookout.

New Items / Shop Hop 2008

Have a look at the new Silk Garden Sock and Shawl yarn. It consists of 40% lambs wool, 25% silk, 25% nylon and 10% kid mohair. It is slightly heavier than regular sock yarn and would work perfectly for a lovely shawl as well as socks and other items. There are 330 yards per ball and can be ordered through the website or purchased in the shop. $19.99 per skein.

This item is unusual. It is called a sock blank and is meant to be unraveled and knit into a pair of socks. Different, huh? It comes with a pattern for the socks and also suggests you can use it for a hat, fingerless gloves, mittens and more. My idea is just to add a fringe to both ends and have an instant scarf. It is time to announce the second annual Atlanta area shop hop. The dates are September 13-21, 2008. There are eight shops participating this year. If you were a hopper last year you know the drill. If not, this is how it works. Purchase a passport for $1.00. These go on sale August 7th. Visit each of the 8 shops and make a minimum $10.00 purchase. You will then have your passport stamped. If you complete the passport with all eight stamps, you will be entered into the grand prize drawing, a $100.00 gift certificate from each of the 8 shops. Of course there will be other prizes as well, depending upon your level of completion. In addition, each shop you visit will be handing out an original knit or crochet pattern with your purchase. With the gas crunch you might want to carpool with friends and make a day of it. Some of the shops will have late hours during the week and be open on Sundays to make it more convenient for you. Flowing In - The New Items

So I've been to the TNNA show and seen all my reps and the new items have started to flow in. Don't have any photos to show right now but I will tell you about some of them. The most unusual item is a new needle gauge in the shape of a chambered nautilus sea shell. It is small and compact and can be worn on a chain around your neck to keep it handy. It is a different version than the long plastic gauges we are used to. This is made out of metal and comes in different colors. Retail $16.00.

Next is some glorious sock yarn from Claudia's Handpainted Yarns. This is the first time I have purchased her yarns and I don't know what took me so long. We have added about 12 colors in the fingering weight, beautiful colorways. The hank is 175 yards so it would take two to make a pair of socks. Retail $13.00.

Just arrived from Plymouth Yarn: Alpaca Lace, about 400 yards for only $7.50 -incredible! Also, Alpaca Prima, slightly heavier and the new colors in Baby Alpaca Grande including new Tweeds and Hand Paints. Just gorgeous! They also sent new patterns to complement these yarns.

We received a new plate by Laurel Burch. That's right, a plate in the shape of a cat head. How cute this is. Also coming from LB are new designs in totes, luggage and flip flops. I was so worried that her line would not continue when she passed away but someone there has obviously taken over where she left off and we are very grateful. Come see all her happy faces.

There is much more on the horizon and I will report as they arrive. Don't forget to turn in your Toasty for Needle Nook socks by July 5th for the contest. Hope to see some great new designs.

Learn To Cast On For Toe Up Socks - OK- you know how to knit a sock from the top down but how about from the toe up. The trickiest part of it is the cast on and toe shaping. Helpful Hints For Happy Knitters - This class is for those who have just begun to knit or those who already knit and would like to learn some tips that make your knitting more efficient and pleasant. We will discuss items such as how to read a yarn label, how to convert meters to yards and much more. You won't be disappointed when you leave this class. Swirl Shawl - Another innovative design from Jojoland, this shawl forms delicate swirls which connect together to form a lovely shawl. Heel For Toe Up Socks - OK - you've taken the cast on class and have knit your sock up to the heel- now what? Since you are knitting the sock in reverse, the heel construction is different than from cuff down socks. Eve will walk you through this process. Auction Quilt - Report on Ovarian Cycle Fundraiser

Last winter Mrs. Wright's 4th grade class from the Children's School paid us a visit and selected yarn for their afghan project. Each student knit a square and Mrs. Wright put the quilt together and knitted the border. Last year the quilt brought $1,000 at auction but this year it brought a whopping $2,600 for their scholarship fund. Here's to a job well done and we are already looking forward to next year.

Now for our report on the ovarian cycle fundraiser. On May 3rd we had 15 vendors set up outside the shop on the sidewalk and sell some of their beautiful hand made items. There was everything from sterling silver to glass to knit and crochet items and more. We also had a bake sale and a raffle. All of these events combined brought in $1,700.00 for cancer research. Thank you to everyone who contributed by selling, purchasing, baking or buying tickets. We will try to do this again next year and have an even bigger turnout. It's part of our community service projects and a very worthy cause.

A Basket Full Of Bliss!

Look at this basket filled with Schaefer Anne sock yarn. We snagged about two dozen hanks last week and this is what they look like. All colors, many combinations, all beautiful. I am working my first toe up sock in a lovely purple (what else) and blue combination and it is a dream to work with. The fiber content is 60% merino wool, 25% mohair and 15% nylon. The generous hank contains 560 yards, which is enough even for a mans size. The gauge is 7-8 stitches per inch and I am working mine on a 1.5 needle. Care is hand or machine wash. This hank is sold for $27.00 and is a worthy addition to your stash. Drop by to see the colors and select one for yourself.

Customer Spotlight Sale

Needle Nook has been involved in community service projects for many years. Currently we are helping to raise funds for ovarian cancer research. Scientists are trying to develop an early detection test for ovarian cancer. We are now supporting "Ovarian Cycle", an indoor cycling event. Participants solicit sponsors for their 6 hour endurance ride. While we are not riding the bikes, we are sponsoring our first ever "Customer Spotlight Sale" on Saturday, May 3rd. Any of our customers can sign up and bring a table to sell their fiber-related wares from 2:00-6:00 this day. Many of our customers do other crafts including beading, polymer clay, quilting, sewing, weaving, knit and crochet and more. You are invited to bring your items and sell them to the public with the understanding that at the end of the day you will donate 15% of your sales to Ovarian Cycle. The only restriction is your hand spun yarn or original patterns. If you can't sell your goodies, you can still come by and support the effort by purchasing items from our customer vendors. In addition, Shirley Robb has donated this beautiful shawl to be raffled off at 6:00PM, after the sale ends. Tickets are $5.00 each and contributions are tax deductible if made out to Ovarian Cycle. Well things are moving along. I am not a pro yet but I am learning how to navigate and add items to the website. It is very involved and technical to me. Since the last post I have added the list of Needle Nook's current classes, some web specials and now you can click on a yarn to see all the colors available. Hopefully I will continue to grow in this endeavour. Please be patient. Happy Easter to all of our friends and customers. Since we are closed on Easter Sunday the Amigurumi group will meet next Sunday, March 30th, at the regular time. We just got in a new book on this subject. Hope to see you soon.

The Needle Nook is proud to announce it has joined the rest of the world and started a website, complete with a shopping cart to order yarn and accessories. To start we have listed Malabrigo, Toasty for Needle Nook and our stitch markers. Hopefully I will be adding items as I can figure it out. But for now, please check out our new site and let me know what I need to do next. Happy knitting and crocheting. Speaking of crocheting, did you know we have started a crochet group which meets the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 4:00-6:00PM, after our regular shop hours. Toasty for Needle Nook Sock Contest

We are proud to announce our Toasty for Needle Nook sock contest which is being sponsored by numma numma yarns and Needle Nook. All you need to do is purchase a hank of Toasty for NN (since 1-1-08), design and knit an original pair of adult socks, and wait for the prizes. All entrants receive a copy of the patterns of all contestants socks and a goody bag. Rules are available at the shop. The contest began on Feb. 1st and ends on July 4, 2008. You will be required to sign a waiver giving numma numma yarns and Needle Nook the right to publish or sell your pattern. Designs must be original and not previously published.

Check out the photo of the mitered square sampler of all 24 Toasty for NN colors. You can choose your favorite. As an added bonus, anyone who needs help designing your socks can attend one of our sock clinics. The first will be held on Sunday, March 9th at 1:00PM and the second on Sunday, April 13th, also at 1:00PM. Attendance is limited to those who have purchased their yarn and plan to enter the contest. You will need to bring supplies (needles, practice yarn, etc) for your help. You can cast on and knit some ribbing in advance. Malabrigo Silky Merino, Part 2

Guess what? Malabrigo double shipped our order and added in the 12 back orders so we now have a full 25 colors in this incredible yarn. Good thing too because we were out of several colors anyway. Here are two photos I took today of the bounty. Come check it out.

SILKY MERINO-A DREAM YARN

The long wait is finally over, well at least half over. We received only half of the order we placed in November. This is the Malabrigo Silky Merino that is 50% silk and 50% merino and 100% heavenly. The colors are very vibrant because of the silk and the feel is very soft because of the merino. It says dk but you can knit this yarn easily to worsted weight. I knit a swatch on 6 needles and got almost 5 to an inch. The hank is 150 yards and it takes about 2 to make a scarf. Price is $12.00 each.
This lovely piece is knit in Arlene's Purples on a size 8 needle. I am doing the fishtail lace pattern from "365 Knit Stitch Calendar". I have finished one half and knitting the second half separately, then will kitchener the two pieces together. This is so the pattern is facing the same direction on both ends. Very interesting.

The yarn is a delight to knit with, no splitting or other problems. Haven't found any knots in it so far. The brilliance of the colors is due to the silk content. It is just as wonderful as the original worsted weight Malabrigo. Our afghan knit along is progressing and the members are having fun selecting new patterns and stitches to try out. The photos I have seen on our yahoo group are wonderfully inventive. Combinations not seen before. We are having a good time posting to each other and admiring others squares.

Teddy Bears Need Clothes!

The Needle Nook has always been committed to charity projects. Some of our past projects include chemo hats for Egleston and ovarian cancer scarves, the Red Scarf Project and currently we are knitting chemo hats for the Chemoflage Program. But we see a need in Atlanta for additional help for the Atlanta Knitting Guild's trauma bear project. The guild has been dressing bears for years and donating them to various organizations. They currently support the Georgia Center for Children which services children who have been abused in any number of ways. The counselors give a bear to the child while they are questioning them about unpleasant events that have occurred. The children find it soothing and relax more and will open up to the counselor. We have decided to support this project and are asking you to help us by knitting a sweater, hat, pants, dress or other items for a 12" - 18" bear. You do not need to provide the bear, only the clothing. You can find many free patterns on the web (http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/) or http://www.atlantaknittingguild.org/. A search will bring you many, many sites to check out. You can drop off your finished items at Needle Nook or mail them to us. This is a great way to use up scraps of yarn, half balls, etc. and reduce your stash. You will receive a warm glow from knowing the person you helped is an innocent child. If you are on Ravelry there is a brand new group you can join called "Charity Bear Knitters" and don't forget "Needle Nook Knitters". Thanks for your help.

New Arrival - Berroco Linen Jeans

Our first spring yarn has made an appearance. It's a 70% linen, 30% rayon tape called Linen Jeans. The 7 colors are very muted with the appearance of stone washed jeans. Berroco has designed 12 patterns for this yarn. It knits to a gauge of 4.75 stitches per inch on a 9 needle and is hand wash, lay flat to dry. I usually purchase yarns that have clear colors but this was so appealing to me because of the muted palette. I think it is destined to become one of your favorite sweaters, the one you turn to most often. Come by and check out the 7 new pattern books from Berroco. This is one of the most "wearable" collections they have put out in a long time. I think you will like it too.

Mrs. Wright's 4th Grade Class Visits.

The 4th grade class from the Children's School paid a visit to the Needle Nook in mid-December. Their teacher, Mrs. Wright, is teaching them to knit. Some of them already know how to knit. Last year's class knit squares which were then turned into an afghan. The afghan was auctioned off as a school fundraiser and brought in over $1,000.00. All 18 students (9 girls, 9 boys) will contribute a square to this year's afghan which will once again be used as a school fundraiser. You rock Mrs. Wright for teaching an important skill to both the girls and boys. I am looking forward to seeing the finished project so I can show it to all on this blog.

It's the last day of 2007. This year has really flown by. I did not finish all the projects that I had started but started alot more than I finished. I'm a great starter. But I don't beat myself up about any of that. I have given myself permission to put aside those projects that don't interest me any more or that have become a burden. I only want to knit those that make me happy and that I enjoy. I hope you are enjoying knitting every day; if not knitting, then some form of crafting or creating. It brings inner peace and tranquility to the soul, something we all could use more of. My wish for you in 2008 is health and happiness and the time to work on that which makes you glad, lifts your spirits and that you enjoy. Happy New Year to you and all your families. I Finished One Sock

I have completed one sock from the new Kureyon sock yarn and I must admit I wasn't too keen on this yarn at first. It seemed scratchy compared to most of our wonderful sock yarns. But I was determined to knit one so knit it I did. There were some interesting slubs of unspun yarn along the way but the colors were great and very Noro looking. When finished I washed the sock lightly and rinsed in hair conditioner. That really softened it up and made it wearable. So yes, I give it a thumbs up as far as knitting socks. Since I am only knitting one sock for a shop model I have decided to knit a multi-directional scarf with the rest. I think this will work out great as it is so colorful. And since I know it will get softer, I am not worried about it being next to my skin. So if you are a colorful person, this yarn may be just the right ticket for you. Come by to see the model and capture a skein of your own. Remember, it's on special until 12/31/07. Happy Holidays everyone.

Holiday Hours and After Xmas Sale!

The Needle Nook will close at 3:00PM on Monday, Dec. 24th, be closed on Tuesday and reopen on Wed. Dec. 26th with an end of year reduction sale. Kureyon Sock Yarn Arrives

We've been waiting very patiently for our first shipment of the brand new Noro Kureyon sock yarn to arrive and today it did. This extra large skein will easily make a pair of socks for almost anyone except bigfoot. The colors are true Noro, blends of shades you don't expect together, but POW! there they are. The color mixes will enable anyone to enjoy wearing this new addition to our ever growing wall of sock yarn. I know we are up over 20 different brands by now. Malabrigo Silky Merino in Arlene's Purples

Here it is! I received two hanks of this gorgeous yarn yesterday. So far all I have done is fondle and stroke it, and wonder at the thought of having a yarn color named after me. I am having so much fun with this. Now I need your help in selecting a project to knit up with it. I have two hanks, 150 yards each, and it is a dk weight. What do you think? It can't be too large because I don't have much yardage. Let me know your ideas. Nothing too fancy for this. It has several shades of purple within. Thanks

Join Our Malabrigo Afghan Knit Along

Eve and I have been knitting Malabrigo squares for a while now. The intention is to put them together into an afghan. We are choosing patterns from the "365 Knit Stitches" calendar and making all the squares about the same size. We have had customers ask us for help in this area and decided to do a knit along (KAL) for this project. Knitting small squares is a great way to try out and learn new stitches. You can try cables, yarn over patterns, knit and purl patterns, lace patterns and many more. We will be meeting the first Wednesday and also the first Saturday of each month to work on the squares. January 2nd and 5th will be the first meetings, 1:00 - 2:00 PM each day. You can select the day that works best for you. During this first meeting we will be selecting colors and patterns to use for the first set of squares. Each hank of Malabrigo worsted will knit 3 squares. We have determined that 30 squares will make a nice size afghan but you can select the number that suits you, larger or smaller. You can make a bed size, lap robe size, baby size or other. I just wanted one large enough to cuddle up under while watching tv. There is no charge for the program except supplies: needles, Malabrigo yarn, pattern book, markers and row counter. You are required to purchase at least 2 hanks to start your program ($12.00 each). Additional yarn can be purchased monthly or as you need it.

New Malabrigo Color Named After Me!

Wow, the thrill of a lifetime. I love Malabrigo yarn and carry quite a few colors in my shop. About a year ago I asked the owner if he would name his next purple (of course, what did you expect, brown?) yarn after me. He said he would, but I never saw any new colors come out. The sales rep was in to see me yesterday and was showing me the new and very gorgeous Silky Merino yarn, 50% silk, 50% merino wool. As I was drooling over the stunning colors I came across a lovely variegated purple and its name was------Arlene's Purples-----. Wow, was I ever surprised as it had been so long since my request. I am now the proud owner of a yarn color name. This new yarn is going to be so fabulous. The sheen is pronounced because of the silk and the colors are accentuated because silk accepts dye so well. I don't know what else to say except you have to see them for yourself when they arrive (no delivery date yet). I did knit up a swatch for Stu and one smaller one for the shop so you can come in and see a tiny sample for now. But just wait until you see the real thing. I love yarn and some more than others, but this is going to be right up there among my favorites of all times. I cannot wait until it arrives. Should be late December or Early January. I will keep you posted.

This is the second yarn that will carry my name. Our beautiful Toasty has a purple color named All About Arlene. This color will only be available at Needle Nook. I am currently working a pair of socks in this colorway. The yarn is so soft, a dream to knit with. I am a lucky girl to have two heavenly yarns carry my name.

Oh yeah, the foot is getting better, the swelling is going down and the pain is reduced. I might even be able to wear something besides white sandals in a few days.

Oh What Fun It Is To Have Gout!

I am truly in the holiday spirit. Had big plans to shop for gifts last week but Mother Nature had other plans. My left big toe area started hurting about 10 days ago, on a Friday. By Monday I could hardly walk and was able to get a doctors appt. that afternoon. Imagine my surprise when the diagnosis was gout, a build up of uric acid in a joint. Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to wait until Wed. to get proper medication. I started taking it, had a fairly decent Thanksgiving (feast was delicious), but had to stop taking it on Friday due to very bad GI upset, a common side effect. Since it is a holiday weekend, of course there is no one to call to get advice. I have to wait until Monday AM. But in the meantime I have been very productive sitting on my couch.

I have finished the following: second handwarmer, scarf for grandson, original shawl which was about 2/3 done, two Malabrigo squares for afghan project and am working on a second Toasty sock. At least sitting at home was not in vain. But I am going back to work on Tuesday because I have an appointment with Plymouth sales rep and then another appointment on Wednesday. This is also the season for purchasing spring yarns. I hope they will have some nice new items for me to see.

This year the relatives may have to do their own gift shopping since I don't think I will get to it before Hanukkah unless my foot feels much better. I think I'd better learn to internet shop although I really prefer to buy locally. Sometimes you just can't help it. Oh, I forgot, another thing I learned while at home is that I will never become a baker. I tried to make some chocolate thumbprint cookies and after slinging the dough all around the kitchen with my small hand-held mixer, I decided to let the bakeries have my business. There are some things that are best left to the professionals, like baking and yarn dyeing. I tried that once too and after just one episode decided the hand dyers deserved every dime they charged. Why bother when there are so many to choose from already? I'm sure there are those who enjoy this craft but I am not one of them. So I'll just stick to knitting their fabulous yarns and being amazed at what they can create. I'm just not cut out for it. I have more fabulous hand dyed yarn on order. I just can't stop myself. I need a support group. Help!!!

I'll be the one hobbling about with a sore foot. I have Gout, off all things. It attacked my toe on Friday and has gotten progressively worse since then. I have been to the doctor and am awaiting a prescription for a miracle drug that will knock it out. After all, I need both feet to eat my Thanksgiving meal. Speaking of thanks, I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very special holiday with family and friends. Coming Soon - Kureyon Sock Yarn

I wanted everyone to be on the lookout for a fabulous addition to our ever-growing sock inventory. Kureyon, that famous Noro yarn, is coming out with a sock weight in 12 luscious colors. They are scheduled to arrive in December. Each 100 gram skein will contain approximately 460 yards. Although this yarn is not superwash, I thought it important enough to break my own rule and add it. The colors are sensational and it will stripe up on its own, just as the regular Kureyon does. I will sing out when it arrives, hopefully early December and not late.

Archie's Kilt

One of our regulars at Knit Nite is Archie Gunn of Scottish descent. He showed up last time wearing his casual kilt, a very spiffy PURPLE plaid. This is the second time he has appeared in his full regailia and I thought you too should be treated to this handsome Scotsman. Archie is an expert sock knitter and just loves to knit a pair for family and friends. Besides that, he is a wonderful baker, often treating us to his delights. He is a welcome addition to our group. I will show you more of the group during upcoming posts.

On the yarn front, we have received a second order of Dream In Color Smooshy sock yarn. Oh what a beautiful display I have made from the fabulous hanks of this glorious yarn. Our first order sold out fairly quickly but I ordered triple the amount of each color so this should last a bit longer. If you have not seen this great addition to our stock, stop in soon to see what you have been missing.

The Shop Hop continues and we have been amazed at the number of hoppers who have been to our shop. It all ends on Sunday so be sure to turn in your passport to any of the shops by close of business Sunday. We will be open Sunday from 1-4 PM for the last of the shop hoppers. The Shoppers Keep Hopping - Day 2

The first day of the shop hop was wild but the second day was even wilder. Folks were out to get their passports finished in two or three days. Here's Patricia with 7 stamps already! Most had a geographical plan. Few stuck to it. The UGA game in Athens thwarted many from making Main Street Yarns their first stop. So they worked around it and devised a new plan. Since this is our first hop, the shopowners really didn't know what to expect, but we are very pleased with the turnout. We all hope everyone is having a good time and will win great prizes. Breast Cancer Awareness Scarf

Our shop has always been involved in community service projects - from hats for Egleston to Ovarian cancer scarves to chemo hats for Chemoflage. We have adopted the Chemoflage program to help and support. We are supplying hats to be distributed to the program attendees and could use any you could donate. We have also made up a kit to knit a lovely pink breast cancer scarf. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to this program. The kit consists of two balls of pink Wool Bamboo yarn, two straight bamboo needles with pink bead toppers (size 6 and 9) and a free pattern. The kit sells for $31.50. New Cashmere Scarf Model

Ever since we had the Jojoland Trunk Show I have been coveting the cashmere scarf and shawl models they loaned us. Well, good news, I have my own now. I broke down and purchased a scarf in the loveliest lilac and a shawl in blue. They are both so soft and luxurious to feel, I can't help but do that every time I am near them. I forgot to snap a photo of the shawl but here is the scarf to drool over. It only takes one ball to complete and the shawl takes two. Treat yourself to some downright decadent cashmere soon.

New Interchangeable Bamboo Circular Set

We have just received a brand new set of interchangeable needles from KA. The only other bamboo set we have had only contained 5 needle sizes. This one has ten, 5-15. It comes with ample cables, all tucked into an invisible pocket on the side. The cables screw on to the needles and it is a very smooth join. I brought one home and tried it out and had no trouble sliding yarn over the join. It's small and compact and would travel very easily. Sells in the $99.00 range. This would be great to add to your Santa list!

The Shop Hop - First Day

Well the first day of the shop hop has come and gone and it was a busy one. We had about 40 hoppers and some were very serious about it. One gal started her day at 8:30, left to drive to Main Street in Watkinsville, swung back by All That Yarn, visited two more shops and came by our shop at about 3:00PM. Said she thought she was finished for the day. Had a few with one or two stamps and another late in the day with 5 stamps, so I guess people are really participating. That's a good turnout for the first day. We have decided to remain open next Sunday for the convenience of the hoppers. Will see what the week brings.

It's Shop Hop Day!

Today starts the first ever Atlanta Shop Hop. Ten shops will be included and it will be interesting to see how many hoppers we get. I am hoping for a ton. The prizes are so fantastic that I would hop if I could. Needle Nook is giving away (1) a full bag of Malabrigo merino wool (2) a sweater kit from Berroco (3) a huge hank of novelty yarn from Trendsetter and (4) a hank of Toasty (All About Arlene colorway). This adds up to over $200.00 in prizes just from my shop and there are 9 others to add to it. So the prize distribution should be terrific. I am so bummed out because I ordered special markers that said "Shop Hop 2007" on them to give away to the hoppers but they didn't make it here in time. Had to cancel the order yesterday because they hadn't even gotten them in yet. Oh well, next year there will be more time to plan. Needle Nook decided to stay open both Sundays of the hop to make it easier. I look forward to it. Will report on the first day.

Look What I Brought Home Today!

I ran into the shop to deliver some new wire bins which we have to add on to our sock display - and look what arrived! Spinning Bunny 50% superwash merino and 50% tencel in the Tropical Sea colorway. Last time this came in it got sold before I could snare any but not this time. This photo doesn't show the subtle color changes which make it Tropical Sea. It has some green, blue and purple nestled in a bed of turquoise - yum! I plan to knit a stole for ME out of it, I hope soon. There is one more skein for a lucky soul, along with a dozen other delicious colors (can you tell I think about food a lot (yummy, delicious)? I can't help it - the words describe the incredible shades of hand dyers so perfectly. So I will keep using them. Anyone have some new words for me? The larger shot shows the same yarn, hopefully you can see the other colors too. Eve is halfway through a sock in this yarn and it is just beautiful (see, I didn't use a food term).

Beth just called me at home to say that Dream In Color phoned and they are shipping our next order of Smooshy on Monday. Yippee! I thought I was going to have to wait much longer for this to come in so I was pleasantly surprised. Oh you just don't know the pain of it with all this glorious yarn available and not enough time to knit it all (and not enough money to buy it all). So we have to pick and choose what we think you will like. Sometimes it is a crap shoot, but sometimes we pick a winner. These two yarns fall into the latter category.

I'm also waiting for samples of 3 new hand dyed yarns from an individual dyer. I have found this to be very rewarding, working with small individual companies, rather than with so many of the big guys. That is not to say that we won't buy from them too, but we like to have lots of variety to offer. I already have appointments to see sales reps for ordering spring yarns. Don't think I will be too heavy into that area, but we will see.

I'm New At This

Everyone has a blog so now I've got one too. My Ravelry friends say I need a blog. So what should I blog about? Let's see. I guess I will talk about yarn and being a yarn shop owner since that is what I am and what I do.

I am the owner of Needle Nook, located in Atlanta, Ga. and have been for over 31 years. The shop has evolved from latch hook, crewel, needlepoint and cross stitch to knitting and a bit of needlepoint. I must say I enjoy the knitting aspect much more than the others although I did a tiny bit of latch hook early on, no crewel and a lot of cross stitch, mostly counted thread. That was back in the days when I could see better. Now I confine myself to knitting and the occasional needlepoint.

So I'll be talking more over the next few days. The big event going on shortly will be the Shop Hop which Needle Nook will be participating in, along with 9 other Atlanta knit shops. Call your favorite shop for full details
